What is clonazepam?
Clonazepam belongs to a group of medicines called benzodiazepines.
It’s used to control seizures or fits due to epilepsy, involuntary muscle spasms, panic disorder and sometimes restless legs syndrome.
It works by increasing the levels of a calming chemical in your brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This can relieve anxiety, stop seizures and fits or relax tense muscles.
Clonazepam is available on prescription only. It comes as tablets and as a liquid that you swallow.
Uses
Clonazepam is used to treat certain seizure disorders, including absence seizures and myoclonic seizures. It is also used to treat panic disorder and anxiety, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

- Increased saliva production

You should not use clonazepam if you are allergic to clonazepam or other benzodiazepines. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medicines. Additionally, tell your doctor if you have:
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), or other breathing problems
- Depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior, or addiction to drugs or alcohol.
