What is Sildenafil?
Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
Sildenafil works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing blood to flow into the penis causing an erection. In PAH, sildenafil works by relaxing the blood vessels in the lungs, allowing blood to flow more easily.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take sildenafil if you are allergic to it or if you are taking other medicines that contain nitrates.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
heart problems, chest pain, a heart attack, or stroke;
high or low blood pressure;
liver or kidney disease;
retinitis pigmentosa (an inherited condition of the eye);
a physical deformity of the penis (such as Peyronie’s disease); or
an erection lasting longer than 4 hours.
