What is fluoxetine?
Fluoxetine is a medication used to treat depression, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and bulimia nervosa. It is also used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Fluoxetine may help improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level and may decrease nervousness.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use fluoxetine if you also take pimozide or thioridazine, or if you are being treated with methylene blue injection.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
bipolar disorder (manic depression);
cirrhosis or other liver disease;
kidney disease;
diabetes;
seizures or epilepsy;
narrow-angle glaucoma;
a bleeding or blood clotting disorder;
low levels of sodium in your blood;
a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts;
heart problems, or if you take medicine to treat heart problems; or
if you are receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
